Two of the most eagerly awaited calendars on the campus of The Ohio State University this fall were the annual editions of "Men of the Scarlet and Gray" and "Women of the Scarlet and Gray."
The calendars, first published in 1987 feature "pin up" style photos of male and female OSU students.
Three of the past calendars have featured students from Worthington. This year is no exception. The current edition features 1990 Worthington High School graduate Caren Frantz as Miss February.
According to Sean Ashbrook, publisher of the calendar, Caren was recruited while walking across campus.
"I discover a lot of the models while riding my bike across campus," Ashbrook said. "When I first started, I would never have thought of going up to a stranger on the street and asking them if they wanted to be in the calendar. We tried advertising and distributing flyers, but we found the best way to recruit them was on the street."
Caren has no professional modeling experience, but she said she felt comfortable agreeing to the assignment because she knew other Worthington students who had posed for previous calendars.
"I talked to Cyrus McKinney (another model from Worthington and he said it was a lot of fun, so I decided to it," she said.
Most of the photos were shot during a week-long stay in Key West, Fla., last July. The models stayed at the Casa Gato Mansion and the photos were shot at various locations around the island.
"We attracted quite a crowd. Everyone was trying to help. I was in a canoe for one picture and everyone was calling out suggestions. Some of them were unwanted, but most of the people were pretty friendly," Frantz said.
Frantz said her family's and friends' reaction to the calendar has been very positive. "Everyone is really excited for me. They're all happy with my pose. This year's calendar is a lot less provocative than last year's," she said.
The less provocative theme is best illustrated by the fact that this year Miss July is none other than Cindy Cooper, daughter of OSU football coach John Cooper. Cindy is pictured in a tasteful pose in front of the American flag. Fortunately, there's nothing in the photo that would disappoint Dad.
Frantz said she has no plans to actively pursue a modeling career, but may give it a try if she receives a good offer as a result of her appearance in the calendar. She is currently a sophomore at OSU working toward a career in fashion merchandising.
