Calendars Risque This Year
News Transcript
(This is an unedited, uncorrected transcript):
Reporter: No, you're not getting a sneak peek at Sports Illustrated's next bathing suit issue, but the idea behind these calendar is much the same. Skimpy suits and lots of skin. These are the 1991 Women of the Scarlet & Gray. And these are the OSU men. In years past, critics of the calendars have said it gives OSU a bad name. But we couldn't find any real critics tonight.
Female OSU student: I think its meant for fun towards the students, not so much as image portrayal of the university.
Male OSU student: I don't think it portrays the school well, but it doesn't really bother me. Because I mean you almost expect it from calendars either guys or girls.
Reporter: But what you may not expect is a poster like this, it gives new meaning to the "Best Damn Band in the Land." The real band members we caught up with said it bothers them, but just a little.
Band Member: To an extent, yeah, 'cause they have the hats on and the instruments but, I don't know, they should be able to take pictures of what they want.
Reporter: What they want tends to be a little more risque this year. Tamika Sherman is one of four models featured who isn't an OSU student.
Reporter: Do you think that's the kind of thing that should be, ya know, affiliated with the university?
Tamika Sherman: Sure, you know Sports Illustrated has basically the same thing. Why not OSU?
Reporter: That's what editor Sean Ashbrook says.
Sean Ashbrook: With regards to OSU, I think that a lot of high school students are going to be coming to OSU because of these calendars.
Reporter: That would probably please school officials, but the calendar doesn't seem to. A spokesperson for the university told me students are free to participate if they want, but stressed the calendars are no way affiliated with OSU.
Anchor: Marcie, I was just wondering about something, do the student models make big bucks posing for this calendar?
Reporter: Well actually, the models don't get paid to pose, in fact they have to shell out about 250 bucks of their own just to be in the calendar. However, the models tell me they in turn sell them and that means they can eventually the models can make about three times that.
Anchor: And it sounds like they are going to.
