Ross grad OSUs Miss December

Krista Lee Culbert models 1993 calendar

When Ohio State University calendar guy Brian Schaaf suggested fellow Ross grad Krista Lee Culbert try out for the 1993 Women of the Scarlet and Gray calendar, she was shocked.

"I said, 'Are you kidding!"' she said. "I was flattered. I mean, I had done some modeling before in Detroit, but nothing like this."

Krista eventually decided to give modeling in the OSU calendar a try, but convincing her parents to support her decision was not so easy.

Krista's parents, Sherri and Roger of Wagner Road, made a number of calls to Sean Ashbrook, the photographer and publisher of the popular calendar, and to parents of other OSU calendar women to learn more about the operation. And when Krista brought her contract home, Roger, a lawyer specializing in contract law, went over it with a fine tooth comb.

"I wasn't too concerned when I learned that Krista would have complete control over the shots, and which ones would be used in the calendar, " Sherri said. "She's very mature, and we knew that she wouldn't do anything she wouldn't be comfortable with."

The shot Krista chose for the calendar turned out to be one where she posed topless while laying chest-down on a pillow. It was pose she was not sure she liked at first.

"I wasn't really comfortable laying there without having all my clothes on, Me said. "But some of the people in the background joked with me and I started to enjoy myself."

Krista added that at no time did Ashbrook or his crew see her topless. "I held the pillow to my chest the whole time," she said.

In the end, Krista chose that particular shot for the calendar because she felt it best described her as a person.

"I'm really happy with it, even though I had the least amount of clothes on," she said. "I think it shows who I am. I was being myself."

Krista's mother agreed.

"The smile, that's Kriss," said Sherri. "To me, you can see her personality coming right through."

Krista admitted being featured in the calendar has not been an unmixed blessing. Some guys at OSU have taken it as an invitation to be obnoxious, particularly about asking her out.

"Everybody wants to date the calendar girl," she said. "So I tend to go out with people I've known for a long time."

Also, Krista said she realizes her calendar picture could be a shock to some back in Fremont.

"I think the people who know me will understand and not think anything of it," she said.

Although she considers the calendar shot a success, the OSU sophomore has no plans to make a career out of modeling. Her real ambition is to be a child psychologist.

"I did the calendar partly for some extra money for school," she said. "But also, when I get older I want to be able to pull U out and say, 'I looked like that once!"

Although Krista Lee Culbert was chosen to model in the OSU calendar, the opportunity did not come for free

Like fellow Ross graduates Phil Missig and Brian Schaaf, who were featured in the male OSU calendar, Culbert had to pay the calendar's publisher and photographer, OSU student Sean Ashbrook, $400 up front.

In return for modeling in the Women of Scarlet and Gray, Culbert was given 110 copies of the 1993 edition. She can keep any profit she makes selling the $10 calendars - she has sold five dozen so far.
