Calendar Pinups of OSU
Many Cleveland Area Students Are Featured
While planning your next festive meal, why not throw in a hefty hunk of Buckeye beefeake, followed by a modest slice of campus cheesecake? "Chef ' Sean Ashbrook of Columbus has come out with his fifth annual set of calendars featuring men and women of Ohio State University, including a respectable representation of Cleveland-area student models.
"Every year we seem to get a lot of students from Cleveland and the suburbs. It must be something in the water up there," Ashbrook said.
Two 1993 calendars are available: "Campus Men® ," photographed in Key West, Fla., and "Women of the Scarlet & Gray," shot around campus.
Area students pictured include Kim Gallucci, 22, a senior majoring in communications who is the daughter of John and Carol Gallucci of Lyndhurst.
Ashbrook, 25, said he "discovered" Gallucci while she was walking across campus-a typical way he's found models since he started publishing the calendars in 1987, while a sophomore at OSU (majoring in advertising).
So far, in approaching students about calendar-modeling, "I've never been slapped or punched," said Ashbrook, who's from Akron.
He isn't real specific about just what he's looking for in a calendar girl or guy.
"I just know what I like when I see it," Ashbrook said.,
Apparently, Gallucci had it, and wasn't particularly put-off about being asked to pose. But just to be sure, she said, "I talked it over with my father, and he thought it'd be something fun to do."
The resulting pose (for February) has Gallucci perched on a pile of pom-pons in Ohio Stadium, revealing little more than what can be seen on any summer beach. (Pretty much the same for the guys' version.)
Gallucci said she wasn't too concerned about criticism from those who view such things as swimsuit calendars and beauty pageants as exploitative meat markets. "I was more concerned about what my family was going to say; whether they'd like it or not."
They did.
Though she'd never modeled before, and hasn't since, Galluci isn't considering switching future careers. "I did this for fun. If anything comes out of it, that'd be fine."
Mr. December-Jack Coyne, 22, a junior majoring in premed at OSU-said he's gotten several offers from local agencies since the calendar came out, and wouldn't mind doing some more modeling.
In the calendar, Coyne, the son of David and Erna Coyne of Euclid, is pictured with scuba equipment in the Florida surf-a shot nowhere near the anatomical correctness displayed in some of the men-in-thongs shots. "It's less . . . controversial," Coyne said of his "My mom would've killed me if I had anything on like some of those guys."
Other area calendar models include:
Mr. February, Rob Walker, 25, majoring in civil engineering; son of Elsie Walker of Lorain.
Mr. June, Tom Adams, 21, majoring in physical therapy; son of Tom and Jennie Adams of Hudson.
Response to the calendars in past years has been pretty much everything Ashbrook could hope for, with near-sellouts of the 3,000 copies of each calendar printed. Models aren't paid, but can earn money by selling calendars, Ashbrook said.
Ashbrook, who'll be returning as a junior at OSU next year, isn't planning on a future career based on his success with calendars. "I do this as a hobby," he said. "I enjoy it. But I definitely want to go on to other things after graduation."
Till then, he'll gladly sell you a photographic slice of campus life, at $8.95 per calendar. You can get one by calling him at (614) 29-IMAGE, or writing: Sean M. Ashbrook, Publisher, Box 3301, Columbus. O. 43210-0301.
